Education Cloud vs Nonprofit Cloud: which one should run your advancement office?
Picture a university choosing a Salesforce product for advancement. The CIO wants Education Cloud, so a gift officer can see that a donor's daughter enrolled last fall. The foundation's executive director wants Nonprofit Cloud, because the foundation has its own board and cannot wait for a campus CRM project with no start date.
Both are right about their own teams. Both products process gifts, manage pledges, and track donors. The right choice depends on how your advancement office is organized.

For a university advancement office, the rule is this. If advancement works alongside admissions, student success, and alumni relations, Education Cloud is usually the better fit. If advancement runs through an independent foundation with its own board and its own systems, Nonprofit Cloud often fits better.
Here is how to tell which one describes your team.
What is the difference between Education Cloud and Nonprofit Cloud?
Education Cloud is Salesforce's CRM for colleges and universities. It connects recruitment, admissions, student success, and advancement around one learner record, from prospective student to alum.
Nonprofit Cloud is Salesforce's CRM for nonprofit organizations. It covers fundraising, program and case management, volunteer management, and grantmaking.
The fundraising layer overlaps. Both products use the same gift structure: Opportunity, Gift Commitment, and Gift Transaction. So the real question is not which handles gifts better. It is what advancement needs to sit next to.

When is Education Cloud the right choice for advancement?
Education Cloud fits when advancement is one stage of a lifelong relationship with the institution.

Admissions or student success already runs on Education Cloud. Advancement joins a system that already holds the student record.
Gift officers use student-era context every week. Majors, activities, family ties, and event history sit on the same record as giving history.
Alumni relations and development plan together. Engagement history, mentoring, and volunteering live beside pledges, recurring gifts, soft credits, and fund designations.
Leadership wants one view of each person. A trustee, a parent, and a former student can be the same person.
The trade-off is coordination. In a shared system, advancement no longer sets its own release calendar or data rules. It agrees them with admissions, student success, and IT. Agree early on which office is responsible for each person's information, and those conversations stay short.
When is Nonprofit Cloud the right choice for advancement?
Nonprofit Cloud fits when advancement operates as its own organization.

The foundation is a separate legal entity. It has its own board, IT decisions, and Salesforce system. Student data arrives as a feed.
Many donors never studied at the university. Parents, friends, local businesses, and foundations give too. Nonprofit Cloud is built around supporters of any kind, so a donor does not need a student history to have a complete record.
The office runs more than fundraising. Scholarship grants, community programs, and volunteer work match Nonprofit Cloud's program and grant capabilities.
The team already runs on NPSP. Salesforce still supports NPSP, but its new innovation has gone to Nonprofit Cloud since that product launched in March 2023. Moving to Nonprofit Cloud keeps the ideas your team knows, such as campaigns, recurring gifts, and soft credits, and puts them where Salesforce is adding new features.
The trade-off is extra work to see the whole person. A donor's years as a student sit in the campus system, not in Nonprofit Cloud. If gift officers want that history in front of them, the two systems need to be connected, and someone has to plan and maintain that connection.
How do you decide between the two?

Checklist before you choose

Start with how your office is set up, not with the product

Both products process gifts well. The decision that lasts is where advancement's data lives and who governs it. Settle that first.
